Job Description

The Johnson County Library seeks engaged, qualified candidates to fill the position of Maker Services Specialist.  The Maker Services Specialist plays an integral role in a patron's experience at the MakerSpace. As a front-line resource, this role is responsible for supplying great patron experience in a Johnson County Library branch, MakerSpace, online, or in the community.  Applications for this job will be accepted through the end of the day on November 11, 2024.  Duties include:

 

  • Greets all MakerSpace guests; provides patrons one on-one instruction and training on MakerSpace resources including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC and vinyl cutting, sewing, and other digital fabrication equipment; develops and maintains product knowledge regarding tools, equipment, materials, and software for specific projects in order to meet the needs of patrons using Maker Services; maintains a safe and comfortable library environment; completes checklists for opening and closing procedures; tracks statistics; performs basic maintenance on equipment as needed; seeks additional support from Maker Services Coordinators to address advanced patron inquiries, research, and outreach needs.
  • Understands and promotes the Library and its services; supports patron engagement with Library catalog and Maker Services website by offering access support and basic training; maintains a general knowledge of Library principles and values, including intellectual freedom principles, Patron Advisory Services, current JCL promotions, events, programs, and related information that supports a patron’s ability to maximize JCL resources available to them.
  • Develops and maintains Maker Services knowledge and equipment; proactively and regularly monitors basic safety, security, and cleanliness protocols, including workplace safety and security training, adhering to all relevant guidelines; conducts initial issue assessment and/or troubleshooting of equipment issues; escalates facility issues through appropriate channels and procedures.
  • Provides informal tours to introduce new patrons to the MakerSpace and its wide range of resources and tools; supports program delivery; promotes systemwide programs, outreach, and initiatives.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions; reviews publications and other materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in digital fabrication and design; works with supervisor, subject matter experts, and Learning & Development to identify training, development and growth opportunities and requirements for Maker Services.
  • Creates an environment of teamwork, collaboration, and support with Maker Services Facilitators; collaborates and communicates with internal stakeholders, as well as County and community partners to expand the impact of Maker Services and Library.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

60 hours of college credit in any field are required.  Two (2) years of customer service experience is also required. 

 

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

 

Education/Experience Substitutions:

Experience may be substituted for education.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year of experience working in a MakerSpace or similar environment is preferred.

 

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

Lifting:  Up to 50 pounds.

Exposure to fumes and/or chemicals.

Exposure to loud noises.

Safety sensitive job.

All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.

Evening and weekend work required.
