Job Description

Looking for an opportunity to make a difference in local government? The County Auditor is searching for a curious, and self-motivated individual to join our team as a Staff Performance Auditor I, Staff Performance Auditor II or a Senior Auditor (depending on qualifications). We work in a collaborative manner. We value creative thinking and new ideas to ensure our audits provide objective information to elected officials, the public, and county management. We offer the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule. First review of applications will begin on April 2, 2025.  

 

The Staff Performance Auditor I will assist with routine performance audits of County operations under the direction of more experienced staff, duties for this position are:

  • Gathers and analyzes information through research, inspections, interviews, and analytical procedures.
  • Prepares workpapers under Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards.
  • Writes clear, concise, and accurate summaries of audit assignments.
  • Works with others to achieve audit goals and objectives. Completes assigned duties and tasks on time.
  • Develops and maintains a proficiency in performance auditing through on-the-job training and continued professional education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Staff Performance Auditor II will conduct a variety of complex performance audits of County operations, some may have a financial aspect.  The duties include those of the Staff Performance Auditor I above, plus:

 

  • Gathers qualitative and quantitative information through research, inspections, interviews, and analytical procedures.
  • Determines compliance with prevailing laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Writes clear, concise, and accurate summaries of audit findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Helps prepare audit reports.
  • Collaborates on adjustments to audit plan and audit methodology.
  • Participates in assessments of internal control systems.

The Senior Performance Auditor duties include those of the Staff Performance Auditor I and II above, plus:

 

  • Writes audit reports.
  • Recommends revisions to the audit plan.
  • Assesses internal control systems for reliability and effectiveness.
  • Advises management on the effectiveness of controls.
  • Recommends corrective action to address control findings.
  • Schedules and manages assigned audit activities, resources, and deadlines.
  • Builds external relationships to ensure constructive communication and collaboration with County departments.
  • Coaches Staff Performance Auditor I & IIs.
  • Provides technical guidance, oversight, and leadership during audits.
  • Assist with professional development and training.

 

Because this position may be filled at the Staff Performance Auditor I, II or Senior Performance Auditor level depending upon the successful candidate's experience, the compensation range is $59,253 to $119,768 annually.

Job Requirements

Staff Performance Auditor I

Minimum Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, public administration, business administration, economics, law enforcement, social science, or other relevant field is required.

 

Experience may be substituted for education.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year professional level experience in a government, private, or non-profit organizational setting with emphasis in accounting, audit, public administration, finance, or other relevant work is preferred.

 

Staff Performance Auditor II

Minimum Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, public administration, business administration, economics, law enforcement, social science, or other relevant field and three (3) years of professional level experience in a government, private, or non-profit organizational setting required.  Examples include accounting, performance audit, performance management, finance, public or business administration, program management, or other relevant work.

 

Experience may be substituted for education.

Education may be substituted for experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree in any relevant field is preferred.

 

Senior Performance Auditor

Minimum Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, public administration, business administration, economics, law enforcement, social science, or other relevant field and five (5) years of professional level experience in a government, private, or non-profit organizational setting required.  Examples include accounting, performance audit, performance management, finance, public or business administration, program management, or other relevant work.

 

Experience may be substituted for education.

Education may be substituted for experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree in any relevant field; Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or other similar professional certification; Previous experience auditing information systems and one (1) year leading, directing, supervising or coordinating the work of others preferred.

 

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. 

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:
All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments/agencies in a declared emergency situation.
