Johnson County Mental Health Center is looking for a Crisis Call Specialist to join our Crisis Team. JCMHC has supported a 24/7 crisis line for over 40 years and recently became a member of the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988). The intent for the 988 phone number is to prevent suicide, divert individuals from hospitals and law enforcement contact, and support individuals in navigating resources to meet their needs. The 988 Crisis Team is a 24/7/365 team working 12 hour shifts (7a-7p and 7p-7a). This team is co-located in Johnson County’s Communication Center, sharing space with Sherriff, Fire and Med-Act 911 dispatch. The 988 Crisis Team works closely with Johnson County’s first responders.  

 

Additionally, this position will support JCMHC Mobile Crisis Response Team. MCRT is dedicated to resolving emergency situations by providing brief and intensive services with the goal of reducing the need for hospitalization, diverting from justice system contact, providing crisis intervention, and offering assertive outreach.

This is a PRN position that will be utilized to expand coverage for 988 and MCRT on overnights and weekends (Friday evening through Sunday evening), with the possibility of last-minute need requests. Schedule options will be discussed during the phone screening and interview. This position is eligible for a shift differential specific to weekday overnight hours($.75/hr), weekend hours ($75/hr), and weekend overnight hours ($1.50/hr).

Job Description

Duties include:

 

Both 988 Crisis Team and MCRT

  • Assesses for suicide risk and other safety related concerns to determine the least restrictive level of care needed, developing a safety plan to remain in the community or coordinate higher level of care as appropriate.
  • Provides support, education, and connection to resources, as needed for appropriate crisis response.
  • Partners with law enforcement on emergency detention as appropriate relating to the crisis.
  • Collaborates with JCMHC teams, family members, hospitals and other community agencies to advocate and partner for individuals’ needs.
  • Completes and submits clinical documentation regarding services provided.

 

988 Crisis Team

  • Answers 24-hour crisis calls, chats and texts providing empathic and compassionate support.
  • Oversees acquisition and forwarding of all necessary documentation for individuals requiring voluntary hospitalization.
  • Conducts check-in calls as a follow-up from a previous crisis contact.

MCRT

  • Responds across Johnson County as part of a 2-person team, providing mobile crisis interventions to a variety of individuals in crisis. Consults with a clinician prior to clearing the contact, if not paired with a clinician, this will be by phone.
  • Provides outreach and follow-up to prevent mental health crisis and/or criminal justice recidivism from various referral sources.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field is required.  May require KS/MO driver’s license, depending on department or agency.

 

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions.  Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

 

Preferred Job Requirements:

One year of related work experience is preferred.

 

Education/Experience Substitutions:

Experience may be substituted for degree. Education may be substituted for experience.

In some instances, statutory or regulatory requirements may prohibit substitution of education and/or experience. 

 

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
