Job Description

Our government rests on the foundation of citizens choosing the representatives who govern us. Consequently, the Johnson County Election Office manages voter registration, precinct boundaries, candidate filings, and campaign reports, and as mandated by the laws of Kansas, administers all federal, state and local elections for over 450,000 registered voters and for more than 2,300 elected positions in Johnson County.

 

The Election Communications Coordinator will assess, plan, implement and evaluate internal and external communications and plan and support community relations and outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities include:

  • Social media: Serve as an admin on election office social media accounts; research and create appropriate social media posts across active social media accounts; maintain a calendar of timely/appropriate/relevant content for posting on social media; respond to questions/comments on social media; work with leadership to provide accurate and appropriate responses to difficult questions.
  • Community relations: Take a leadership role in planning outreach activities; oversee the coordination of student elections in area high schools; research and create other innovative ways to engage the community in the support of elections in Johnson County; respond to public emails in a timely and appropriate manner; review public email inboxes for open records requests and forward to legal/leadership for response.  
  • Media relations: Work with the county's communications team to interact with and coordinate media requests coming into the election office; provide requested information to media with approval of leadership; work with county communications to write and distribute news releases, web stories, articles, and marketing materials.
  • Creativity: Creates and produces basic graphics and communications materials and distributes county-branded flyers, brochures and handouts; responds to requests for graphic elements, evaluating detailed requests to the county’s communications team;  Creates branded assets for promotional materials for department use. 

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or relevant field of study, two (2) years’ experience in journalism, corporate or organizational marketing, communications or public relations, and professional experience using software to create graphic elements for social media and creating videos for social media required.

 

Experience in public sector or non-profit communications preferred but not required.

 

Experience may substitute for education and education may substitute for experience.

 

Candidate must be able to successfully pass motor vehicle and criminal background screenings.

 

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:
All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments/agencies in a declared emergency situation.
